Color Palette Generator

Build a five-color palette from a base color, a chosen harmony or a local image. Locked colors preserve specific slots so brand colors survive regeneration. CSS custom-property export turns the result into reusable design tokens.

Optional image supplies dominant sampled colors. Up to five locked colors keep their slots. Random mode uses browser cryptography. Export CSS tokens; image stays local.

How the calculation works

Harmony modes vary HSL hue angles and lightness. Image mode samples an 80×80 preview, quantizes RGB channels into bins and selects the most frequent opaque colors. Locked colors override sampled or generated slots.

Worked example

A base #087a6b can produce an analogous palette around neighboring hue angles. Lock #ffffff and #111111 to retain them in the first two slots while the remaining colors are generated.

Assumptions and limitations

Image extraction accepts a PNG, JPEG or WebP up to 2 MB and 16 MP. Sampling is approximate, not a professional perceptual clustering analysis. Transparent pixels below half opacity are ignored.

Palette harmony does not ensure accessible text. Run intended foreground/background pairs through the contrast checker, and distinguish decorative colors from semantic status colors.
