Scientific Notation Calculator

Keep decimal input exact while converting between ordinary, scientific and engineering notation. Perform arithmetic on large or small numbers without first rounding them to a binary floating-point approximation. The exact fraction is retained when division repeats.

How the calculation works

Scientific notation uses a coefficient with 1≤|coefficient|<10 and an integer exponent. Engineering notation uses an exponent divisible by three. Decimal coefficients are converted to integer numerator/denominator pairs.

Worked example

1.23e4 × 2e2 = 2.46 × 10^6 = 2,460,000. Engineering notation is also 2.46 × 10^6. Dividing 1 by 3 gives the exact fraction 1/3 and a truncated decimal preview.

Assumptions and limitations

Inputs are at most 100 characters, exponents range from −300 to 300, and exact results are capped at 1,000 numerator/denominator digits. Repeating decimals show an ellipsis after at most 340 places.

Scientific notation alone does not set significant-figure rounding. Use the precision calculator when your task concerns measured values and rounding conventions.
