Fence Cost & Material Calculator

Plan fence runs, gates and shared posts, then estimate panels or pickets, rails, concrete and material cost. Change lengths between feet and metres using the explicitly labelled unit selector.

How the calculation works

For each run: net length = run length − gate count × gate width. Spans = ceiling(net length ÷ maximum spacing). Run posts = spans + 1 when fence remains, plus two gate posts per gate. Pickets = ceiling((net length + gap)/(picket width + gap)), then round waste upward. Deduct explicitly shared posts. Concrete = posts × (π × hole diameter² ÷ 4 − square post width²) × depth × concrete allowance.

Worked example

A 10 m run with one 1 m gate leaves 9 m of fence. With 2 m maximum spacing, five spans require six fence posts plus two gate posts. At 10% panel allowance, buy six panels. Subtract one shared post only if your actual layout counts it twice.

Assumptions and limitations

This is a materials model, not a surveyed layout or structural design. A gate splits the fence; use separate runs for more accurate post layouts. Shared-post deductions are manual. Panel prices include rails; individual-picket mode estimates separate rails. Post dimensions must fit the circular holes.

Confirm property boundaries, utilities, wind requirements, permitted heights and supplier spacing. Holes, corner assemblies and hardware can differ by site. Labour, delivery, caps, fixings and permits are excluded unless reflected in your entered prices.

Common questions

Why are gate posts separate?

Gate openings generally need support posts. This model counts them separately; subtract a shared post when an adjacent run already counts the same physical post.

Are rails counted with panels?

No. Panel mode assumes rails are included in the panel price. Picket mode estimates rails per span.
